37 megatons of CO2e

A study conducted by TeamViewer together with the DFGE – Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economy showed that using TeamViewer solutions has a significant positive effect on global CO2e emissions. The amount avoided is impressive: 37 megatons of CO2e.
But what are CO2 equivalents? When we talk about emissions, we often focus on carbon dioxide (CO2) — the most dominant greenhouse gas. However, there are a number of other gases, like methane, that significantly contribute to global emissions, all of which together are quantified in one single metric called CO2e.

Scientifically proven

The use of TeamViewer’s digital solutions in the working and private environment – ranging from remote support in the office environment to steering and controlling machines as well as remotely supporting friends and family with IT issues helps, scientifically proven, to avoid CO2e emissions. An average TeamViewer connection can on average avoid 13kg CO2e. An average TeamViewer subscriber avoids up to 4t CO2e per year.

The avoided 4 tons CO2e per year of an average TeamViewer subscriber represent a train journey of 100,000 km – a distance of about 2.5x around the world.

How was the data raised?

Anonymus online survey

User Profiles

A central part of the detailed study was a voluntary, anonymous online survey, conducted between October and November 2020 among users of TeamViewer. The 1,007 participants were almost evenly distributed across EMEA, APAC and AMERICAS, around 60% were paying customers, the other participants were private non-commercial users.
One challenge of the study was that TeamViewer’s solutions can be used for various scenarios and use cases in all industries. Ranging from service technicians maintaining deep-sea cranes hundreds of kilometres offshore without travelling by plane, to IT specialists remotely managing the global server infrastructure for their company and friends and family helping each other with IT problems – regardless of where they live.

That is why the DFGE developed 216 descriptive user profiles to represent as many different use cases as possible. These profiles evaluated whether TeamViewer is used daily, weekly, monthly, or annually, and calculated how many trips with which distance would or could be replaced as well as which means of transport would most likely be used for the trip.
Based on the usage scenarios, TeamViewer customers were asked in the online survey to estimate their travel activities in each case, if they would not use TeamViewer. To further validate the data, a sample of TeamViewer customers – differing in terms of industry, product application and size – were questioned in qualitative expert interviews.

Conducted by DFGE

The study was conducted by the renowned DFGE – Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economics. The DFGE is a well-known research institute with over 20 years of experience in determining carbon footprints of blue-chip companies from various sectors ranging from BASF to Volkswagen.
