TeamViewer installs R&D hub in Portugal to drive AR and IoT innovation

Goppingen/Porto, May 12, 2021: TeamViewer, a leading global provider of remote connectivity and workplace digitalization solutions, today announced the establishment of a new Research & Development (R&D) hub in Porto, Portugal, to enhance its leading engineering force in strategically important fields like Augmented Reality (AR) and Internet of Things (IoT). Through recent acquisition of the Porto-based software development agency Hapibot Studio, TeamViewer already kick-started its on-site presence with a team of around 20 highly skilled software and design engineers. The new location is expected to grow significantly over time to become a key component of TeamViewer’s global R&D organization.

By establishing an additional R&D hub in Portugal, TeamViewer doubles down on the strategic advancement of its engineering capabilities for world-class software innovation. The decision for Portugal as location was based on a comprehensive selection framework evaluating key growth and cultural factors including availability of top talent, educational infrastructure, regulatory framework, entrepreneurial mindset, and quality of life. TeamViewer was supported by the Portuguese government, through the support of AICEP – Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency – since the starting point and throughout the process.

Pedro Siza Vieira, Minister of State for the Economy and the Digital Transition, said: “The Portuguese government is very glad to welcome one of the most dynamic European tech champions to Portugal. TeamViewer’s decision to develop cutting-edge Augmented Reality and Internet of Things innovation out of Porto is a strong proof-point of Portugal’s attractiveness as up-and-coming tech ecosystem.”

Mike Eissele, Chief Technology Officer of TeamViewer, said: “Portugal is an excellent location for our new R&D hub with many good universities and a large pool of top engineering talent highly motivated to drive the next wave of digitalization. We are quite excited to become active part of such a vibrant tech hotspot. With the awesome Hapibot Studio team joining TeamViewer, we already hit the ground running to push the boundaries of our solutions and accelerate innovations with TeamViewer technology made in Portugal.”

Luís Castro Henriques, Chairman & CEO of AICEP, said: “Portugal has been able to position itself as a preferred destination for the global tech industry, and it is with great satisfaction that we welcome TeamViewer’s new R&D Hub in Porto. Portugal has a highly skilled talent pool and a multilingual and multicultural working environment that are attracting increasingly specialized technological Centres. TeamViewer’s cutting-edge project proves the extremely valuable skills of Portuguese Talent in the demanding tech ecosystem”.
